Potato cones with poppy seeds

Potato cones with poppy seeds are traditional Czech sweet dish popular mainly among children. It is very easy and quick dish made of potato dough topped with poppy seed and covered in butter. In the Czech is known as “šišky s mákem”.

  • 600 g boiled potatoes in their skins
  • salt
  • 1 egg
  • 60 g semolina
  • 200 g wholemeal flour
  • flour subgrade
  • for serving: ground poppy seeds
  • icing sugar
  • melted lard or butter

Preparation process:

Potatoes (preferably boiled the day before), peel and grate on a fine grater. Add the flour, sugar, eggs, a little salt and knead smooth dough that is not sticky. Rolling board sprinkle with flour and shape the small cones – on the little finger thick, about 6 cm long, which put into salted water. When they float to the surface, they are cooked. Remove them from hot water and serve sprinkled with ground poppy seeds and icing sugar and topped with melted lard or butter.
